New History of Glencoe Boy Scouts Released

If you are a Boy Scout or were a Boy Scout or are simply a fan of scouting, you must read this incredible Glencoe Scouting history impeccably written and researched by long-time Highland Park Scout John Ropiequet.

Scouting in Glencoe began in 1910 at the Glencoe Union Church when the Rev. Dr. Douglas Cornell formed the first troop.  Although not many records survive from the earliest days, Mr. Ropiequet spent literally hundreds of hours reviewing newspaper coverage of Boy Scouting activities in the Glencoe News from 1920 through the end of 1947 to prepare his illustrated history.

The Glencoe Historical Society commends him for his extensive research and efforts to preserve this very valuable history of our community.

GHS Produces Virtual 2020 Memorial Day Program

GHS traditionally partners with the Village of Glencoe to present the community Memorial Day program at Veterans Memorial Park.  This year, that program could not be held in person due to the Governor’s extended Stay at Home Order, so GHS prepared a virtual ceremony to remember veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

The ceremony became more special, however, with new research from our GHS volunteers.  The team worked hard to learn more information about the stories of Glencoe’s gold star soldier and, for the first time ever, to find photos of each man.  Residents were invited to participate in the virtual Zoom ceremony which can also be viewed here.
