John Burton, a Glencoe resident, attorney for Chess Records,
owner of Parrot, Blue Lake, and other record labels,
played a part in feeding your passion.

KNOWN AS “LAWYER” BURTON IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY,
he worked behind the scenes, but was a trailblazer in the early 1950s,
bringing Black performers and their music to the larger world.

THIS SPECIAL CD IS A SAMPLER OF JOHN BURTON’S MUSICAL LEGACY.
It features 15 songs recorded between 1951-1956 on the Chess/Checker, Blue Lake, Parrot and Sapphire labels.
Showcasing the gutbucket Chicago blues of Dusty Brown and Morris Pejoe,
the slightly more sophisticated Chicago stylings of renowned guitarist Jody Williams debut session as Little Papa Joe,
Lou Mac, Danny Overbea, the only Chicago session for New Orleans chanteuse Erline Harris,
the rollicking Memphis R & B of Bill (Red) Love, and the group sounds of the day from the Nobles and Orchids.
Burton co-wrote the humorous lyrics of St. Louis Jimmy’s “Murder in the First Degree.”
