The roof was the focus of activity at the Wright-designed Cottage in Glencoe this week. The Contractor demolished the chimney above the roof because the masonry fireplace will not be moved with the Cottage.
The Contractor was pleased to find that the low-slope roof membrane on the Cottage was in very good condition. The anticipated replacement of this membrane will not be required for several years. Roof scuppers and gutters are also in decent condition, but will be further reviewed for any needed repairs and restoration in keeping with Frank Lloyd Wright’s design concepts.
A low-slope roof, emphasizing the horizontal focus of the home, was a typical feature on many of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. It allowed the house to visually “hug” the earth and blend in with nature.
